Picture Books: Part 4: Holocaust

There are some books you just don't read to little kids, because the content is so deep or even scary.  Here are two examples that went along with our World War II unit.

The Yellow Star: The Legend of Christian X of Denmark by Carmen Agra Deedy

This book went right along with our Literature Circle book called, Number the Stars. There is a mention of King Christian and how he did not like the presence of the Nazis in his country.  This tells how dedicated he was to his country and his people.

Golem by David Wisniewski

This book could get a little scary for some.  I even had a few turn their heads at one point.  It talks about the Jews being persecuted and how the rabbi calls up Golem from the ground to help save the Jews.  There is a great history behind it and it is given in the back of the book.  I was not surprised after reading this book that Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was based upon this medieval legend.
