Boys of Steel: The Creators of Superman

by MarcTyler Nobleman
Illustrated by Ross MacDonald
Alfred A. Knopf Publishers, 2008
This story begins during the Great Depression of the 1930's. Jerry and Joe were in high school together. Joe would illustrate and Jerry would type for their comic books. At first kids didn't understand them until they made a stranger in a regular place a hero. This tells where the "S" for Superman came from and gives a biography of their start at the end. I would recommend this book for any middle/upper elementary student interested in comic books and art. The illustrations are typical for that time period.
